The Japanese Red Cross has deployed medical tents and 82 medical teams to the affected area. Volunteers are on the ground providing first aid and search and rescue operations. The Red Cross has started Restoring Family Links (http://www.familylinks.icrc.org) activities and emergency relief planning is underway.
The Red Cross is responding to a powerful 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan. The earthquake, the largest in Japan’s history, triggered four metre waves in Japan and tsunami warnings across the Pacific coast.
There are reports of major damage and injuries in Japan and the Red Cross is concerned for countries with vulnerable coastal areas who may not have adequate prevention or response mechanism in place.
The situation continues to unfold and the most urgent needs now are search and rescue support, emergency medical care, clean water and emergency shelter.
